Progress so far

We will be using this section to give updates on the progress made since the charge came in.

We have all seen carrier bags caught in trees or littering roadsides, reducing the quality of the places where we live and work. Single use carrier bags are blight our beautiful Welsh landscape. They are also a waste of resources and are a symbol of our throw away society.

We introduced a 5 pence charge on the supply of new single use carrier bags on 1 October 2011.

The charge aims to substantially reduce the number of single use carrier bags supplied in Wales.

We want the people of Wales to get into the habit of reusing their bags when shopping. The reduction in numbers show that the charge is having a real impact on reducing the number of single use carrier bags supplied in Wales.

For more information on Welsh Government policies on single-use carrier bags, please visit the Welsh Government website.

In July 2013, the Welsh Government published a behavioural study on the use and re-use of carrier bags.
