Routes to School Project

Routes to School Project

A project that has benefitted from the net proceeds of the charge is Keep Wales Tidy’s new ‘Routes to School’ Project.

This project aims to address litter problems on school routes by educating pupils and their families and so changing behaviour towards littering.

With Keep Wales’ Tidy’s help the schools will tackle the litter outside school gates.  They might for example:

  • provide litter lessons;create pupil groups to identify problems along routes;
  • help pupils to organise litter picks outside of school grounds;
  • set up a walking bus incorporating litter picks; and
  • hold school assemblies.

Schools can then take part in a joint project to create an area for the local schools in the wider community. This might include transforming a neglected area into a community garden or outdoor classroom.

The project gives schools the opportunity to work together and pupils will get a chance to meet their future classmates and secondary school pupils.
